You made a great point about how hormones affect sexual desire, but I also think it is important to remember that desire is not only physical. Things like stress, feeling emotionally connected, body image, and relationship satisfaction can have a huge impact on arousal for both men and woment. Recent research shows that when people feel safe, valued, and close to their partner, their sexual satisfaction is usually higher, no matter their gender (Muise et al., 2022). This is important in counseling because many clients think something is wrong with them if their desire changes, when it may actually be related to life stress, parenting health, or relationship concerns instead of hormones.
This also helps couples stop blaming each other. When counselors explain that sexual desire is affected by biological, emotional, and relational factors, partners can become more understanding and work together instead of seeing the issue as one person's problem (Thomas & Gurevich, 2021). That kind of psychoeducation can reduce shame and improve communication and intimacy.
