Hello Class,

To support my dissertation problem space, which examines how leadership practices and change management strategies influence employee retention and morale among frontline workers in rural hotel environments, I will rely primarily on peer-reviewed empirical studies, foundational leadership theory, and industry-specific workforce research. Key sources will include scholarly literature on leadership styles (e.g., transformational, servant, and authentic leadership), employee retention and turnover intention, job satisfaction, and morale within the hospitality industry, as well as research addressing rural or small-community employment contexts. Effective search strategies include developing concept-based search blocks, using Boolean operators to combine related terms, and incorporating truncation and phrase searching to capture variations in terminology. For example, combining terms such as "hotel" AND rural AND retention" or "transformational leadership AND frontline hospitality employees" helps narrow results to studies that align closely with my context. Additionally, using controlled vocabulary or subject headings in databases such as PsycINFO and ERIC increases retrieval accuracy by capturing studies that use different language to describe similar constructs. Citation chaining reviewing reference lists of key articles and identifying newer studies that cite them is also an effective method for locating both foundational and current research (Hirt et al., 2021; MacDonald, 2024).

The keywords selected for my searches include hospitality- and context-specific terms (e.g., hotel, rural, small community, frontline employees), outcome-related terms (e.g., retention, turnover intention, morale, job satisfaction), leadership constructs (e.g., leadership behaviors, transformational leadership, servant leadership, leader-member exchange), and change-related concepts (e.g., change management, organizational change, change communication). These keywords were chosen because they directly reflect the core variables of my problem space and account for disciplinary differences in terminology across management, psychology, and hospitality research. Using multiple synonyms ensures broader coverage and reduces the likelihood of overlooking relevant studies, which is a recommended best practice for comprehensive literature searches (MacDonald, 2024). When responding to peers, I would critically evaluate whether their search strategies include sufficient synonym expansion, use of controlled vocabulary, and citation tracking, and I would suggest refining or expanding keyword sets where appropriate to strengthen alignment between their literature base and problem space.
