Objective of assignment: How bias may affect PMHNP prescribing practices
(Bias: Prejudice toward or against one thing, idea, person or group compared to another; Usually in a way this is unfair. Biases are natural and product of human nature, and they don't simply exist in a vacuum or in our mind's---they affect the way we make decisions and act.)
1: Discuss 2 of the following bias factors that may influence your prescribing practices. Discuss whether the biases were directly experienced by yourself or whether you believe you have any of the following biases. How has the video influenced your biases for your future PMHNP practice? Cultural factors (For example: Working with someone with limited English, someone who is not an American citizen, has extended family members in household, someone who has difficulty with holding jobs, assuming certain individuals will have legal or drug problems, assuming individuals will have similarities to other traditional American families, assuming individuals will have specific religious backgrounds or will be terrorists.....etc)
Legal factors (Someone who has a history of prison or jail time, history of past legal charges, Parents pending legal charges, someone on parole/probation, someone who has a history of felonies)
Ethical factors (Judging someone by the way one looks at life, situations, problems, or a position on something, or what one believes is right. "I believe everyone should be able to quit drinking on their own." )
Social factors ( For example: someone's living conditions, housing (being homeless), basic environment (living in a shelter), social security (disability), food stamps, low education, no family support)
Substance use (For example: chronic alcohol use, Suboxone or Methadone treatment, Methamphetamine abuse, Opiate or heroin abuse)
Economic factors (For example: Unemployment; low income, no health insurance, Medicaid or medicare)
Weight factors (For example: Stigmatization, discrimination against overweight and obese individuals, cultural practices)
Gender factors (For example: inadequate treatment, disparities in treatment, decreased quality of care, symptoms dismissed)
2. Watch one or both of the following videos: Flight from Darkness: A Bipolar Disorder Documentary (60 minutes) and Healing Neen (54 minutes).
3. After reviewing the video(s), Discuss how the video(s) has influenced or changed any bias you have about prescribing as a PMHNP moving forward.
