In my own words, family systems are how families operate as a whole and how all counterparts are connected and needed to function well. Family systems relates to subsystems because subsystems are the small unit that affects the functioning of the family from the inside. For example, the relationship between the parent and child can affect other relationships. If the relationship between the two is strained, it can be difficult for them to communicate, therefore causing the communication in the family not to be as strong as in other family where the relationship between a parent and child is close. In contrast, family systems also relate to suprasystems because it is the outside forces that shape the family. For example, cultural expectations can hinder who's allowed to speak up or how emotions are expressed.
My place within my family system is called "parentified child". My role in the system is the voice, responsible one, and the backup parent. This role was developed because I am the oldest in a single parent household, so therefore I do help my mom when it comes to parenting my brother. I am part of multiple subsystems within my family, such as sibling and parent-child subsystems. I take on a more responsible or parental role than others. My brother looks up at me and respects my opinions as much as my mother's and I have a strong relationship with my mother and feel like I need her opinion and advice which every decision I make.
One communication skill I developed from my place within my family system is the ability to listen to all sides before responding. Because I often take on a more responsible and outspoken role in my family, especially when conflict arises, I have learned to pay attention to different perspectives rather than reacting immediately. This has helped me understand people more deeply and communicate in a way that is more thoughtful and balanced. This allows me to be a more effective communicator by helping me handle disagreements calmly and respond in a way that supports understanding instead of creating more conflict. Need Assignment Help?
