Task: The Heart and Blood Pressure

Activity 1: Heart Structure

Understanding the structure and function of the heart is crucial to better know the cardiovascular system. In this activity, you are to draw a schematic diagram of the human heart. This diagram does not need to be a biological drawing; it can be similar to some of the longitudinal sections you may have seen in your textbook, or just a simplified drawing. However you decide to draw the human heart, you will need to be able to clearly show and label the following structures:

- Left and right atrium
- Left and right ventricle
- Mitral (bicuspid) valve
- Tricuspid valve
- Pulmonary valve
- Aortic valve
- Septum
- Aorta
- Superior and inferior vena cava
- Left and right pulmonary vein
- Left and right pulmonary arteries
- Apex and base

In your drawing, please colour the chambers of the heart that carry oxygen rich blood in red, and colour the chambers of the heart carrying oxygen poor blood in blue.

You will also need to draw the direction of blood flow through the left side of the heart, and the right side of the heart, and also indicate the pulmonary circuit and the systemic circuit.
