Gravitational potential energy

Assignment:

A stone of mass 0.62kg is fired upwards at an angle to the ground and with a speed of 5.5 m s-1, as shown in the figure. The figure shows the path of the stone until it strikes the ground at point C.

Disregard air resistance. Take the acceleration, g, due to gravity to have a value of 9.8 m s-2.

Calculate:

1. The kinetic energy of the stone as it leaves the ground at point A.

2. ON the path (ABC) of the stone, mark the positions where:

a. Gravitational potential energy (Eg) has its maximum and minimum values
b. Kinetic energy (Ek), has its maximum and minimum values.

Explain the answers to a and b above in terms of the energy changes that occur during the flight of the stone from A to C.

3. If the kinetic energy of the stone at its maximum height above the surface of the ground (point B) is 2.3 J, calculate the height of the stone above the ground when it is at B.

Explain how you reached your answer, explaining any principles used. Please remember to quote your answer to an appropriate number of significant figures.
