Question : This week we look at the Supreme Court and its power. At various times this term we have discussed the power of courts in American society. I want us to discuss in more detail how the Supreme Court has played a major role in the development of America.
I argue that America would be a totally different place had it not been for decisions such as McCulloch v Maryland, Marbury v Madison, and even Brown v Board of Education and other more recent decisions such as Kelo v New Haven.
I think the Court has been as important to American history as presidents and Congress. The Court has made decisions that the elected branches could not have made.
Give the class your ideas regarding how America has been shaped by the Supreme Court and how the Court's decisions are shaped by the particular members on the Court at any given time.
