MODULE DESCRIPTION:

Demographic changes and the mass mobilisation of women in the labour market throughout Europe over the last 30 years highlight the importance of re-examining gender relationships in the labour market, the family and welfare state, and underline the necessity of gender-sensitivity in welfare policies. Part of this involves a reassessment of social rights of citizens on which welfare is based and the ability and willingness of welfare states to account for the needs and demands of different population groups. This module will examine how welfare states have addressed these issues, focusing upon gender. It will examine how welfare states have treated men and women, and how (successfully) gender has been incorporated into welfare state theory and analysis. It will look at the extent that welfare states have moved towards gender equality (in policy and outcomes), what this actually means, andwhich welfare states have been most successful in doing so. Specifically, the module will explore gender differences in the contexts of the labour market, care, income and time, and how policy has treated men and women in these respects. In looking at these areas students will be encouraged to contrast the approach of different families of nations as well as looking at differences of national approaches within these families.
