One Saturday morning, “MatinPlus”, a local newspaper published an article where it was said that a detainee died in a police cell and that the death occurred because of him being severely beaten by members of police force. The publication of this article gave rise to severe disorders around the island where members of the public started to gather on the streets. Because of such public disorders, the Chief Editor of “MatinPlus”, Miss Monica, as well as the writer of the article Mr Abongo was arrested by the police and where sent to a detention center found on a nearby island. They reported which there they were held alone in a tiny, basement cell devoid of light, which is called "the grave", for more than 10 months. A small grate in the ceiling opened up in a hallway above and through it cats and rats urinated on them. There was no furniture in the cell, only two blankets on floor. They had no exposure to natural light for the first six months. Furthermore they say that they were severely beaten with electrical cable throughout six days of interrogation, and threatened with electric shocks and the "metal chair” - a torture device that stretches the spine. They therefore argue that they have been subject to mental torture and inhuman treatment and wish to complain to the relevant authorities.
