Find rate of heat transfer passing by rod from end-to-end


A 2.7 cm diameter rod consists of three cylindrical segments placed end to end in intimate contact aligned aong a common axis. The lengths are:

segment 1: 0 < x < 3.5 cm (AISI 304 stainless steel)

segment 2: 3.5 < x < 5.1 cm (Duraluminum)

segment 3: 5.1 < x < 8.3 cm (AISI 1010 carbon steel)

The left-hand end of the rod is in contact with a fluid whose temperature is 27.7 C. The convective heat transfer coefficient at that end is h = 9.8 W/m^2-C. The temperature at the right-hand end of the rod (at x=8.3 cm) is 54.7 C. There are no heat losses from the cylindrical surface of the rod.

(a) What are the temperatures at x=0, 3.5, 5.1, and 8.3 cm?

(b) What is the rate of heat transfer passing through the rod from end-to-end?
