Initially, I assumed the primary issue was that residents with dementia experience high fall rates. However, the literature search and preliminary screening enabled me to narrow this broad concern into a more specific and actionable professional practice issue: the inconsistent use of evidence-based, dementia-specific fall-prevention strategies in LTC settings. The most significant information I have identified thus far is the strong connection between dementia-related cognitive changes and fall risk. Residents with dementia are at increased risk for falls due to reduced judgment, poor safety awareness, gait changes, visual-perceptual problems, wandering, agitation, and difficulty following directions.
