Explain social construction in developmental research


Problem:

One idea from this chapter that felt new and challenging for me was the way race is explained as a social construction in developmental research. It made me to rethink the assumption that race is a biological category rather than something shaped by social and historical contexts. I found myself thinking more critically about how research uses race and how easily it can oversimplify people's lived experiences. This section made it clear that differences in development are often linked more to factors like access to resources, exposure to racism, and social expectations than to race itself. That shift in thinking feels important, especially when considering how research findings are interpreted and applied. As someone going into counseling, this perspective helps me focus more on systemic influences instead of viewing development as purely individual.
