Exercise 1:

Explain how the apple ad differs from the baby/computer ad. How does the baby/computer ad do its work on us? Do you prefer one of these ads more than the other? Explain.

What do you think the computer/baby ad is promoting? What about the apple ad? To what extent might either ad selling or promoting more than one thing or idea?

Exercise 2 :

Look, now, at another such triple image from another HSBC ad, this time of a shaved head. What is your response to this image? Did your perception of and reaction to the image shift just a bit when you saw the second and third terms for the shaved head-"soldier" and "survivor"? Does something affect you emotionally when you view the second and/or third term(s) of this triple image that was not operative in the previous apple triple image? If so, what is it? How can we account for it?

Jot down a few thoughts you have in response to this last image of the three shaved heads. You can include both emotional and intellectual aspects in your response. Then jot down some thoughts about our process of looking at these different images accompanied by carefully chosen words.
