One qualitative research topic that interests me is the lived experiences of survivors of domestic violence who experience housing instability after leaving abusive relationships. The phenomenon of interest is how survivors navigate the challenges of securing and maintaining safe housing while recovering from abuse. Qualitative research is particularly well suited to this topic because it seeks to understand how individuals make meaning of their experiences within their social and cultural contexts (Denzin & Lincoln, 2018). Rather than focusing solely on measurable outcomes such as housing placement rates, a qualitative approach would explore survivors' perspectives, emotions, challenges, and coping strategies during the transition to safety and stability.
Several contextual factors may influence how this phenomenon is studied. Survivors of domestic violence often face financial barriers, emotional trauma, limited social support, and systemic obstacles when seeking housing. Additionally, factors such as race, socioeconomic status, family composition, and access to community resources may shape individual experiences. A constructivist perspective recognizes that each survivor's reality is unique and influenced by personal and social circumstances. Therefore, understanding these lived experiences requires a naturalistic approach that examines the phenomenon within real-world settings rather than controlled environments (Ravitch & Carl, 2021).
This topic could be explored in a variety of settings, including domestic violence shelters, transitional housing programs, community-based social service agencies, and nonprofit organizations that support survivors. Through interviews or phenomenological inquiry, researchers could gather rich descriptions of participants' experiences and identify common themes related to safety, empowerment, barriers to housing, and recovery. These settings would provide valuable insight into how survivors perceive and navigate available resources while rebuilding their lives.
I am personally connected to this topic through my professional experience as a mental health therapist working with individuals who have experienced trauma and domestic violence. I believe this topic is important because stable housing is often a critical component of safety and long-term recovery. Exploring this issue through qualitative research could amplify survivor voices and provide a deeper understanding of the barriers they encounter. The findings could inform policy development, improve service delivery, and support advocacy efforts aimed at increasing access to safe and affordable housing for survivors. Ultimately, this research has the potential to contribute to social change by highlighting systemic inequities and promoting interventions that support survivor safety, empowerment, and well-being.
