Respond to post: Carl Rogers' Patient-Centered Therapy is appealing to me because it focuses on seeing the patient as a whole person rather than simply a diagnosis or collection of symptoms. The concepts of unconditional positive regard, empathy, and genuineness create a therapeutic environment where patients can feel safe, respected, and understood. Rogers believed that individuals have the ability to grow and reach their full potential when they are accepted without judgment (Rogers, 1961). I especially appreciate this perspective because many patients struggling with mental health conditions have experienced stigma, rejection, or trauma. Providing empathy and authentic presence can help foster trust and improve therapeutic relationships. One aspect of this therapeutic modality that may be challenging is that it is less directive than some other approaches. Certain patients may require more structure, education, or guidance, especially during acute psychiatric crises or severe mental illness. Despite this limitation, I believe the foundation of empathy and active listening remains beneficial across all areas of healthcare. I can strongly relate Rogers' theory to the nursing care I have provided throughout my career.
