Expectations for children to uphold cultural traditions

Assignment task: Please edit and paraphrase this text and add any necessary information

Lisa identifies as African Canadian and retains her cultural identity since her parents are traditional and religious and have high expectations for their children to uphold their cultural traditions. Africans experience the same mental health problems as the rest of the population, with much greater pressures due to racism, prejudice, and economic inequities. Lisa comes from a culture that believes problems should be dealt with within the family and that outside intervention is unnecessary; her family may regard discussing difficulties with others outside the family as "airing one's dirty laundry" (Shebib, 2020). A qualitative study by Alvidrez et al. (2008) revealed that more than one-third of Blacks who were already receiving mental health services believed that minor depression or anxiety would be viewed as "crazy" in their social circles.
