Assignment Task: Employability and Career Development Theory

Assessment Aims: The fundamental starting point for any type of career exploration and planning is self-assessment. Whether you are considering your career direction, choosing options or preparing to compete for work, your success will depend in part on your self-assessment capabilities. In this assignment, you will:

1. Demonstrate the ability to use a variety of self-assessment methods, including career development theories, to reflect on a personal employability factor.

2. Demonstrate the capacity to apply future work literature to practical career development practices, such as assessing, planning and describing skills.

1. Exhibit an understanding of career theory, planning and management.

2. Exhibit a capacity to apply skills that reflects an understanding of current discipline-related skills, employability skills, labour-market trends and employment opportunities.

Assessment: Produce a 500 word fully referenced reflection on your current target career area, exploring a relevant Future Work Skill and self-assessment. The reflection consists of four sections:

1. Future Work Skill (200 - 250 words)

2. Skill as Strength (200 - 250 words)

3. Career Pulse Results (maximum 50 words)

4. VMock registration Screenshot.

This report is to be written in a blend of academic and personal reflection (first person) writing styles.

Details: This short assignment will focus on two aspects of the content you have covered so far: Future Work Skills 2020, and Self-assessment methods, including career development theories and online assessments including Career Pulse.

The original Institute for the Future document, Future Work Skills 2020 was produced in 2011 followed by an update in 2016. Now that it is 2020, it's time to assess its relevance by considering its relevance to developing career path.

What you need to do: There are four parts to this assignment:

1. Future Work Skill: Choose ONE of the eleven Future Work Skills (Fidler 2016; Davies et al., 2011) that you believe is RELEVANT to your target graduate occupation.

a. Use evidence (referenced) to explain WHY this Future Work Skill is relevant to your target occupation

b. Use ONE career theory and ONE self-assessment tool to discuss your current level of confidence in your selected Future Work Skill (referenced).

2. Skill as strength: Identify a skill you currently consider as ONE of your STRENGTHS (may be different to the Future Work Skills listed in Fidler, 2016).

a. Use the STAR framework to demonstrate proof of this skill strength.

Note: Strength is more than a capacity to perform a skill. For example, we all communicate, how can you show that you have strong or excellent written communication skills or verbal communication skills?

3. Skill development - Career Pulse: Submit a screenshot of your results page from the Career Pulse online tool.

a. Use your results to identify an area of your career development that could be improved.

4. VMock Registration: Submit a screenshot of your Swinburne VMock Student Dashboard.
