We introduce the concept of "group cohesion" to examine the economic significance of social relationships in team production. To measure group cohesion, we adapt the "oneness scale" from psychology. Across a series of experiments-including a pre-registered replication-we find strong positive correlations between group cohesion and performance in weak-link coordination games; groups with high cohesion are much more likely to achieve superior equilibria. Exploratory analyses suggest that beliefs, rather than social preferences, are the primary mechanism through which factors captured by group cohesion affect group performance. Our results establish group cohesion as a promising tool for both economic research and practical applications.
Our prior research has demonstrated that the oneness scale, which underpins our measurement of group cohesion, is straightforward to administer, highly adaptable, and shows a strong correlation with more comprehensive assessments of interpersonal relationships (Gächter et al., 2015).
