Rhetorical Précis
Evaluating sources helps us keep track of the rhetoric in any given argument. When evaluating secondary sources, it is important to be able to identify not only the argument but also the purpose of the argument. Constructing rhetorical précis allows us to engage with sources in a way that reveals how their argumentative purpose might benefit our own.
Learning Outcomes:
- Analyze, evaluate, document, and draw inferences from various sources.
Requirements:
- One rhetorical précis on a peer-reviewed, secondary source that adheres to the proper format
- The précis must show evidence that the student has read and carefully evaluated the source
- Proofread and MLA formatting
- A properly-formatted Works Cited page
Assignment:
- Find a secondary source that may or may not relate to a topic for your academic research paper.
- Read the source carefully, taking notes that include quotes and page numbers.
- Review your notes.
- Construct your rhetorical précis.
