THE GRADUATE EXPERIENCE:

Your graduate experience can be of immense value to you in the future, not only because it advances specific career or educational goals, but also because it cultivates habits of mind and discipline that will be important throughout your life. It fosters independent research and study; deeper critical thinking; the ability to plan and perform; and skills in communication, research, and presentation. Thus, more attention is given to research techniques and critical perspectives, and the research that students conduct in graduate school is more in-depth than undergraduate work. In addition, graduate school is more intense than undergraduate study and demands a higher level of academic/intellectual rigor. Some classes may require more papers than students might be used to, but the major difference lies in the quality of the papers students write. They are better researched, more in-depth, and require a greater amount of work than most undergraduate papers. In the MBA/MPA Student Center or in your Blackboard course section, you will find the outline and grading rubric for the Graduate Research Paper in the “JSOB Graduate Program Guide.” Please review this guide carefully and contact your instructor if you have any questions. The JSOB Graduate Program Guide is your passport to success during your graduate study. It explains the academic requirement for the master degrees and provides a shortcut to questions which may arise as you complete your program.

In addition, an effective GRADUATE research paper contains the following as a minimum:

1) Provides evidence of independent study and documentation in relation to meeting the stated objective. This includes excellent use of library and other sources to include use of theories, facts, principles, and ideas of experts pertinent to the topic.

2) Provides analysis, originality of thought, and creativity. The student should rely on originality in the use of ideas, analysis, facts, theories and principles from this course discipline and other disciplines. Develop and support your own ideas and display independent thinking.

3) Provides organization of project content and material. The paper is well arranged into appropriate categories and proceeds in a logical manner (e.g. general to specific or specific to general, etc.). APA format is a requirement.
