English 101 proposal and presentation project this project

Proposal and Presentation Project

Write the proposal and review the "articles".

This project involves applying a semiotic analysis of a photographic image that has one or two people in it. You may choose an advertisement, art image, a work of photojournalism or documentary image. It may be a contemporary or historical image. You may not choose a personal photograph or any image from the readings discussed in class. David Chandler's essay "Semiotics for Beginners" and Marita Sturken and Lisa Cartwright's "Myth of Photographic Truth" are the two required readings that you must use to support your semiotic analysis. Additional concepts and ideas from class readings must also be applied in your analysis.

While the focus of this project is applying a semiotic analysis, some research is required to deepen and broaden your knowledge. You must supplement your ideas with two academic journal articles. Academic journals include essays that are written by scholars for peer-reviewed journals. While you may review dictionaries, encyclopaedias, newspaper, magazine articles, blog entries and book reviews they are not academic journal articles. These sources will not count as fulfilling the requirement of two academic journal articles. Coquitlam College's eLibrary Academic Search subscription is one resource you may want to use: click on the eLibrary icon to begin your searches.

You should know the name of the photographer and some information about the context in which the photograph was taken. Aim to find an image that interests you for some reason. Consider how the people (or person) in this photograph are represented. What are they doing? How is identify constructed in the image? How is the photograph framed? These are just some examples of the types of questions you should begin to consider when choosing and analyzing an image.

Proposal - Each student must submit one proposal.

Students will write a short 1.5 typed page proposal (not including the Works Cited page) written in essay form. The first paragraph will introduce the photograph you have chosen, and the thesis you will argue. The second and third paragraphs will be paragraph length summaries of your two academic journal articles. You must provide the title of the article, author's name, and the thesis - not the "topic", the thesis. Summaries must convey the key points of the entire article and end by explaining the relevance of this source to your photograph. You must also include a black and white photocopy of your photograph. With the Works Cited page and the photograph the proposal must be a 4-page document.

Proposal mark will be based on the following: quality of research and critical thinking, relevance of academic articles chosen, clarity and quality of writing and use of correct MLA formatting and citation protocol.

Total number of words 1200 and MLA reference style.
