Approximately 70% of people worldwide encounter at least one traumatic event during their lives, and most experience multiple incidents, averaging about 4.6 events per person (Figueroa et al., 2023). The definition or what may constitute trauma has been refined over the years to depict the essence of what it encompasses. Primitively, trauma was utilized to describe a psychological injury caused by a sudden and overwhelming emotional shock (Blehm, 2025). The DSM-5 expanded its definition of traumatic events to include not only direct experiences of life-threatening harm or sexual violence, but also witnessing such events, learning about them happening to close others, and repeated exposure to traumatic details such as in the work of first responders or trauma specialists (Sanderson, 2013). Some traumatic events may include accidents, natural disasters, acute medical emergencies, or single incident violence.

Complex trauma is frequently rooted in early life adversity such as family violence, poverty, racism, abuse, and neglect, and is strongly connected to health inequities, poorer long term health outcomes, and diminished quality of life (Reid et al., 2023). Complex trauma, often referred to as complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD), involves the core symptoms of PTSD alongside difficulties with emotional regulation, negative self-perception, and challenges in relationships (Reid et al., 2023). Individuals who suffer from complex trauma experienced repeated or long trauma, often have symptoms to include challenges often include cognitive (e.g., dissociation), emotional, somatic, behavioral, relational, and self-perception problems that extend beyond the typical symptoms of PTSD. Effectively addressing complex trauma requires comprehensive treatment approaches that specifically target these diverse impacts. Consequently, understanding complex trauma and its effects is essential for professionals and should be integrated into training programs to improve assessment and intervention strategies (Kumar et al., 2022).

While both terms label the symptoms associated with experiencing events that lead to psychological distress, there are distinct characteristics that set them apart. Trauma typically involves Accidents, medical emergency, and natural disasters just to name a few. Complex typically include trauma chronic, repeated, interpersonal, or environmental harm (Wamser-Nanney et al., 2021). Trauma can lead to a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder where complex trauma includes symptoms of PTSD. Research suggests that minority children may face higher trauma exposure, yet racial differences in complex trauma outcomes are underexplored (Wamser-Nanney et al., 2021).

Freud first defined trauma based on the concept of an open wound. Throughout the Bible we are reminded that God is near and concerned about the brokenhearted and wounded. The points in which this is discuss can provide comfort for someone who is a strong believer of Christianity and accepting of the areas of life that grow us. Need Assignment Help?
