Electromagnetic waves with different ranges of frequency constitute an electromagnetic spectrum. Electromagnetic waves are transverse in nature. Visible spectrum is emitted when excited valence electrons in atoms jump to their normal states. IR rays are emitted by molecules when they change their states of rotational or vibrational motion.
