Dopa (Levodopa) is an oral medication used to treat Parkinson\'s disease, the symptoms of which result from a lack of dopamine in the brain. L-Dopa relies on L-type, or leucine-preferring, transport proteins to cross the blood-brain barrier, and it is converted to dopamine in the brain by the enzyme aromatic-L-amino-acid decarboxylase.
