In classrooms, students often present with behaviors such as inattention, impulsivity, and emotional dysregulation, which can be associated with both ADHD and trauma exposure. Because these symptoms can look similar, there is a risk of misidentification, which may lead to interventions that do not fully meet the student's needs. The purpose of this review is to examine the similarities and differences between ADHD and trauma, including their cognitive and behavioral presentations, and to explore how these distinctions influence the selection of interventions within school-based frameworks such as Multi-Tiered System of Supports and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. This review will also consider the role of school psychologists in assessment, data-based decision making, and collaboration with teachers to ensure appropriate supports are implemented.
