As the physician assistant (PA) profession has matured, it has become important factor in the nation's health care delivery system (Hooker & Cawley, 1997). This study examines 15 years of data related to unsafe medical practice (i.e., practice that harms patients or the public). The study analyzes and compares a variety of markers (e.g., medical board actions and civil lawsuits filed with the National Practitioner Data Bank) of safety between physicians, PAs and advanced practice nurses. Results of the study will be useful to society in evaluating whether the policy to include PAs in the nation's health care system was a safe decision. Results will impact future policy and PA utilization.
