Problem: Lauren is 19 years old and lives at home with her mother. She dropped out of school in Year 10. She is not very good at reading or writing. One day while watching Netflix at home a man came door knocking. His name was Sam and he claimed he was from a 'government' college promising a free education and laptop. Lauren invited Sam in, as she did not have a computer and was using her mother's laptop. Sam told her it was a done deal and all she had to do was to sign on the pink form. Lauren explained she didn't understand very well. Sam told her not to worry and she signed and received the laptop.
Two months later Lauren received a call from the College asking why she hadn't logged on. She was also told that the course was not free and that she had to pay $6,000 for the course.
Advises Lauren - does she have any remedies available under ACL for her situation?
What about Sam? Is he responsible for the College?
