After reading about racial profiling this week, I realized how much stereotypes can affect the way people are treated in the criminal justice system. Racial profiling happens when police officers stop, question, or investigate someone mainly because of their race or ethnicity instead of actual evidence of a crime. According to The Matrix of Race (Coates et al., 2022), racial profiling reflects deeper inequalities that exist within social institutions. These practices can reinforce racial divisions and contribute to unequal treatment in the justice system. Many communities of color experience higher levels of surveillance and police stops compared to white communities. Stereotypes play a big role in racial profiling. Throughout history, certain racial groups especially Black men, have often been unfairly associated with crime in media and public narratives. Over time, these stereotypes become widely accepted beliefs that can influence how people interpret behavior. The article Black Psychology and Black Criminality: Myths and Reality on the Origins of Black Street Life explains that many of these stereotypes developed during periods of segregation and discrimination. These ideas were sometimes used to justify unequal treatment and strict social control. Because of this history, certain groups may be viewed as suspicious even when they have done nothing wrong.
