Discussing the black lives matter

Problem:

Let's consider movements online. When discussing the Black Lives Matter and #MeToo movements, a former student wrote, "sociologists would contend that social media offers a space through which people can resist hegemonic stories and champion social change by giving platform to previously silenced voices."

Yes, social media is giving voice to previously marginalized voices and topics that might have been considered taboo (patriarchal society and sexual harassment). The many, new channels and voices may be difficult to sort through, especially with bots, trolls, fake news, disinformation, etc.

Consider the quote from Nobel Prizewinning economist Herbert Simon who said that "a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention."

Do we have a poverty of attention created by the creation of more media and social media messages that the ordinary person could sort through on the average day?

Pulitzer Prize winning biologist and author E. O. Wilson said, ""The real problem of humanity is the following: We have Paleolithic emotions, medieval institutions and godlike technology. And it is terrifically dangerous, and it is now approaching a point of crisis overall." Do you agree? He also said, "We are drowning in information, while starving for wisdom. The world henceforth will be run by synthesizers, people able to put together the right information at the right time, think critically about it, and make important choices wisely."

Do you agree or disagree? Would he be a proponent of media literacy? Need Assignment Help?
