Respond to student: Young adulthood is a period in development where we see major transitions in identity, relationships, independence, and work. As Dimock said, "for millennials, these transitions were powerfully shaped by the Great Recession, creating what Pew Research Center has described as a "slow start" to adulthood (2019). The young adults who were coming of age during the COVID-19 pandemic have faced different, but similarly disruptive challenges surrounding this historical moment. Looking from a socioemotional perspective, the pandemic directly interfered with this phase in development where individuals are forming stable identities, establishing careers, and pursuing intimacy.
