Problem: Please summarize the following text
As with IM, motivational processes serving SD result from the activation of traits due to cues in the testing environment. Of particular relevance to SD, the testing situation is potentially egothreatening. Two traits expected to be activated by this include narcissism and need for approval: Narcissists honestly believe they are better than everyone else (i.e., it is not a lie), and SD, to some, is identified as need for approval (e.g., Crowne & Marlowe, 1960). Adding to the factors serving SD may be the degree to which the individual idealizes the trait targeted for assessment. Someone who highly values nurturance, for example, may be especially likely to self-deceive as high on that trait. Controlling SD using TAT could entail, in the case of need for approval, softening the evaluative nature of test items, as in the avoidance of highly desirable and undesirable terms. The Personality Research Form (Jackson, 1984) was designed explicitly to meet this objective.11 Deactivating narcissism promises to be more difficult, as SD is a definitive feature of this trait. The more prudent approach, as in the case of Machiavellianism, might be to seek to identify the narcissistic respondent and follow up with more in-depth evaluations (e.g., trait-based interview) to separate the self from the self-enhancement.
