Discuss the various types of heart disease

Assignment:

One common disease process that affects the vessels of the body is called atherosclerosis. Here, fats, cholesterol, and calcium form plaques that stick to the sides of vessel watts causing the arteries to harden, an the passageway for blood to flow to become narrowed (Rosenbai rn, 2018). In time, the build up can block arterial blood flow to the brain (stroke), the peripheral tissues (Peripheral artery disease), and the heart (coronary artery disease). It can also causes an aneurysm, as the arteries begin to bulge out and weaken.

Non-modifiable risk factors cannot be changed. As atherosclerosis takes some time to develop, age is a risk factor, and is seen more often in men older than 45 and women over 55. Having a family history adds to the risk. Ethnicity does play a role, though the specifics are still unclear, and much depends on the interaction between the person's environment and their genetic predisposition (Banasik a Copestead, 2019).

A modifiable risk factor is something that can be manipulated. In atherosclerosis, there are many. Diet plays a large role, and having a poor diet can contribute, especially one that is high in saturated fats and cholesterol. A sedentary lifestyle and obesity also puts a person at risk for atherosclerosis. Smoking damages the vessel wall, raises the likelihood of developing this process (Rosenblum, 2018).

As noted above, there are some risk factors that can not be helped, but many that can. It is important that patients understand the impact of their daily choices on their long term health. Cardiovascular diseases often develop unnoticed, and undetected while irreparable damage is boing done. Perhaps an effort to target and educate young adults would aid in the decrease of cardiovascular disease.
