Discuss the psychotherapeutic modalities you would choose

Problem

Melvin Adams is a 26-year-old man who had his first psychotic episode at 19 during his freshman year at an Ivy League university. Two days ago, he was discharged from an inpatient psychiatric unit where he spent 10 days. Today, Melvin's case manager brings him to the mental health clinic for follow-up treatment.

His psychiatric history revealed the following: He has had more than twenty psychiatric hospitalizations in the State Psychiatric System over the past five years. Most of these hospitalizations have been precipitated by Melvin stopping his anti-psychotic medication (as is this one), gradually becoming delusional and agitated. Melvin rarely keeps clinic appointments between hospitalizations because he does not believe that there is anything wrong with him. He smokes marijuana and drinks alcohol but denies dependency on these substances.

I. Provide a provisional DSM 5/ICD 10 diagnosis

II. Examine and discuss the psychotherapeutic modalities you would choose to use to treat this client. Choose between Psychoanalytic, adlerian, existential, person-centered, gestalt, behavior, cognitive behavior, choice/reality, feminist, postmodern therapy. You may combine therapies (integrative approach), but you must justify the combination. Be sure to include a list of the specific techniques (therapeutic processes and content), not just the theory you would use for this client. Be specific in how you would treat each client.

III. Explain your rationale.
