Discusses the nature of deviance and its role in society. Among the topics examined are norms, differentiation and deviance, subcultures, relativity of deviance, creating deviance, determining norms and the content of deviance.
Your task is to discuss the difference between deviance and crime in a one-page, double spaced paper not to exceed 500 words. Are the two concepts related or unique? Do the concepts serve a purpose in defining normative (socially acceptable) behavior? Answer either of these questions. Use examples and the key words (Absolutist conception, deviance, norm, normative definition, reactivist or relativist definition, sanctions, and statistical definition) provided at the end of the chapter.
