To me, the SARA method seems like a scientific method but for crime. S is for scanning, the first stage of the SARA method. During this step, certain areas that are experiencing frequent criminal activities are watched to figure out which problems need to be worked on first. The second step is to analyze what is causing these certain activities in these certain areas. The A is for analysis. The third is R for response. This is the step where action is taken to try and solve the issue. Once action is taken, the response to the issue is assessed to see if the response helped the issue.
Scanning for reoccurring issues is the first step which comes across a series of homes in a neighborhood that were burglarized in the last six months that have gone unsolved. This would take priority since it has continued and is showing zero signs of stopping. During the analysis stage, we would figure out patterns like what type of people were victims, at what time are these crimes happening, where, and why are they happening. The response could be to create a neighborhood watch with some surveillance cameras installed. After six months of surveillance and neighborhood watch, burglary rates would be compared to see if they have declined. One of the challenges could be the lack of resources law enforcement has for the SARA model. Officers that have been on the force for a very long may also have an issue with any change that made be needed.
