Problem: When people come together with a shared purpose to influence change in society, it is considered a social movement, often organized around common goals, moral directives, or societal values (OpenStax, 2023). These movements play a key role in driving social change, which refers to the transformation of culture, institutions, and social structures over time, often influenced by both collective action and external factors such as technology or shifting societal needs (OpenStax, 2023). One social movement that I feel particular sympathy for is the movement advocating for improved access to and awareness of mental health. This movement focuses on reducing stigma, increasing the availability of treatment, and making mental health services more affordable and accessible. It is important to me because mental health affects people across all walks of life, including all age groups, races, genders, and religions around the globe. Many individuals struggle to receive the support they need, whether that be due to cost, lack of resources, or social stigmatization. The movement addresses issues such as underfunded mental health systems, unequal access to care, and the negative perceptions that surround mental illness. Its objectives include expanding insurance coverage, increasing the number of mental health professionals, and promoting awareness, education, and advocacy. In order to be effective, this movement relies on resource mobilization, meaning it depends on funding, advocacy groups, and media outreach to spread awareness and create change (OpenStax, 2023).
