Discussion -
Do you feel that a client with a sexual dysfunction disorder would respond to therapy differently than a person with a paraphilic disorder? What are unique issues related to treating each disorder? Need Assignment Help?
Classmates Response -
I do think clients with sexual dysfunction disorders may respond to therapy differently than those with paraphilic disorders because the concerns and goals in treatment are not the same. Sexual dysfunctions typically involve challenges with desire, arousal, orgasm, or pain during sexual activity. Many people who seek help for these concerns are doing so because the issue is affecting their relationship, confidence, or overall well-being. Because of that, they are often motivated to work through the problem. Therapy in these situations may focus on helping clients better understand the sexual response cycle, reducing anxiety related to performance, and improving communication between partners. It can also involve addressing stress, relationship concerns, or other psychological factors that may be contributing to the issue (Lehmiller et al., 2020). Paraphilic disorders bring a different set of challenges in therapy. These disorders involve ongoing sexual interests that may cause significant distress or could involve behaviors that place others at risk. Because of this, treatment often focuses more on managing urges, identifying triggers, and helping the client develop healthier coping strategies. In some cases, individuals may be attending therapy due to legal requirements, which can affect their level of engagement. Therapists must also remain mindful of ethical responsibilities and safety considerations when working with these clients (Lehmiller et al., 2020).
