Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a group of rare inherited connective tissue disorders affecting collagen and tissue strength. Patients may present with hypermobile joints, fragile skin, and, in some subtypes, life-threatening vascular complications.
In your own words, describe the pathophysiology of EDS. How does collagen dysfunction contribute to the clinical presentation of this disorder? Need Assignment Help?
EDS is a tissue disorder caused by the effects of decreased or abnormal collagen production. Because of this abnormal production the tissue becomes weaker and easily destroyed.
Ligaments, joints, and skin become easily stretchable and damaged. Patients' skin with this disorder tends to be thin. Patients may also bruise easily and weakened blood vessels may lead to ruptures causing life threatening problems.
Discuss the nursing assessment priorities for a patient with EDS. What symptoms or complications should the nurse monitor closely, and why?
The nurse would assess skin integrity, pain, vascular issue, mobility, and safety of the patient. The nurse would monitor wounds for infections, mobility for fall risks and safety, pain so the patient is comfortable, and vascular for bleeding.
Consider the psychosocial implications of living with a chronic connective tissue disorder. What nursing interventions or resources would support a patient's mental health and coping strategies?
This patient will experience a lot of emotional problems because of the uncertainty of this disease. This patient more than likely experiences all the emotions because of the complications from this disease. The patient may be anxious because of the unknown and depressed because of the complications of the disease. The family or caregiver may experience mixed emotions as well while taking care of the sick person. It is good to provide resources for support groups and counseling to everyone involved. I mentioned in my last post that home health nursing is a great resource to help one go home and keep their independence. Home health may also offer respite care for the family.
Review one evidence-based treatment or management strategy (e.g., physical/occupational therapy, cardiovascular monitoring, or pain management). What is the mechanism of action, and how would you explain this treatment to a patient at the BSN level of practice?
