Friedberg's analytical framework for understanding the formation of the post World War II US national security institutions, and the resulting "broad outlines of American grand strategy" that guided the US during the Cold War (Friedberg 2000, p. 5). Do you agree that his strategic synthesis fully explains the resulting American grand strategy that emerged from the 1945 to 1961 period? Extend your analysis to the post-Cold War era. How does Friedberg's framework help analyze the development of grand, or national security strategy in the current timeframe?

Compare and contrastAmy B. Zegart's Realist, New Institutional, and National Security Agency models. How does each model help to analyze of the roles of post World War II national security agencies, especially the National Security Council and the Joint Chiefs of Staff? Do the models adequately explain the interaction of the President, Congress, bureaucracy and other stakeholders/players in national security policymaking? In what ways does the national security agency model contribute to your understanding of the Washington D.C. interagency process?
