- What are the potential "pitfalls" when an ambivalent client meets a helper who has the "fixing reflex?" Need Assignment Help?

The fixing reflex is a normal human thing according to Miller and Rollnick (2012) that most humans or the ones that consider themselves helpers do to in their attempt to help or "fix" a situation. Some of the pitfalls could include resistance from the client as he feels pressured to feel a certain way so he starts to argue against it and refuses to change. Another one would be that the helper of the situation takes ownership making the client feel that they are not capable or should not make their own decisions. Ambivalence are not explored but more treated as obstacles that one has to overcome. The last pitfall is that the client could feel that they are being judged or misunderstood that just agree but does not have a true change.

- Briefly name and discuss the four key interrelated elements of the "spirit of MI."

Partnership- where the helper and client work together for the answer to how to implement change instead of "teacher/student" roles

Acceptance- where the client is accepted for they are when it comes to their worth, empathy toward others, affirmation and respect for autonomy even when one understands change is needed

Compassion- the helper has the client's needs and well being about their own agenda, outcomes and the need to be right. The helper thinks of the client before themselves

Evocation- where the helper helps the client understand their reasons, values and the desire to change

- Watch the video: The Effective Physician: Motivational Interviewing Demonstration and then look at chapter 1 of the Miller & Rollnick text, and then discuss how the physician is following all four elements of the spirit of MI.

Partnership- Physician and patient were in an open conversation with questions where the patient had to share and the physician was doing reflective listening to ensure the patient was heard.

Acceptance- Patient's mixed feelings and thoughts are respected and made to feel that it is normal to have mixed thoughts. Physician made sure not to pass judgment on the patients past experiences and their struggles that they have endured.

Compassion- Physician's tone of voice and responses showed true concern for the patient's health and life instead of just focusing on giving medical advice

Evocation- Physician questions the patient about any concerns and reasons for change along with any goals that they may have in mind.

- Dr. Jenkins talks about how we can use the "stages of change" model with those who are ambivalent about accepting Christ.  Pick either "Precontemplation" or "Contemplation" (you can internet search for "stages of change" pretty easy, or go to The Stages of Change. Briefly explain what a person who is in that stage without Christ looks like, and how we can help them move towards the "Preparation" stage.  Note: while this is an older video, Dr. Jenkins does an excellent job of taking MI concepts and applying it to those who need The Savior.

Contemplation- person understands that they have a spiritual longing to follow Christ but still has the conflicted thoughts and emotions

One may have a sense of guilt, shame, or emptiness

One may put a value on faith but if they follow Christ then they lose control of their lives

One could ask questions about God but not ready to commit

One could be pulled in 2 different directions, one of their old lives before Christ and then one when they are reborn with Christ (bad vs good)

Preparation

Honor autonomy- respect the fact that one has the right to choose to have faith instead of forcing someone to believe

Explore ambivalence - ask what the reasons to and the concerns not to follow Christ

Evoke values- realize how faith is entangled with one's meaning, peace and how they identify themselves

Affirm movement- understand how to have openness, curiosity and questions to move toward Christ
