While each person has their own idea of these goals, the modes of adaptation have been shown to be consistent. Knowing each of these modes and how they relate will help criminologists to better understand their clients' behavior.
In Merton's theory, he discusses 5 modes of adaptation: conformity, innovation, ritualism, retreatism, and rebellion.
