This week's theme on economic development and oil included readings by author Seymour Martin Lipset on Some Social Requisites of Democracy: Economic Development and Political Legitimacy and author Michael L. Ross on his topic of Does Oil Hinder Democracy? In the first reading, the topic of democracy in complex societies was covered. In these societies, the challenge of societal decision-making among competing interest groups allows the majority of the population to have a say in decisions by having the option of electing one candidate over another for elected office. The reading also examined the behavior pattern, whether it applied to a little or large social system, and how it must lead to particular hypotheses, which the reading contained. As a result, it was argued that in order to discuss democracy, one must be able to point to a set of circumstances that have actually existed in a number of nations and state that democracy has emerged from these circumstances and has stabilized due to a number of supporting institutions and values as well as because of these circumstances. In the second reading, author Michael L. Ross and his topic: Does Oil Hinder Democracy? examines additional theories and focuses related to the theory that political scientists believe will bring about change. According to numerous research and the readings it mentioned how, governments tend to grow more democratic as earnings rise. Adding to this notion, experts in the field sometimes use the alleged incompatibility of oil with democracy as justification for the absence of democracy in the high-income Arab Middle Eastern countries. It concludes by examining the findings regarding how "these findings have implications for the fate of resource-rich states across the developing world. Many of the world's most troubled states have high levels of oil and mineral wealth. Earlier studies have shown that resource wealth tends to reduce economic growth and to increase the likelihood of civil war. This article suggests there is a third component to "resource curse": authoritarian rule" (Ross 2001, p 357). This wraps the reading and it focuses on the relevance of the theme of economic development and oil. Both readings, in my opinion, really emphasize and defend development's ultimate objective and the research that shows how it can be accomplished. The idea of capitalism, along with other concepts like war and neoliberalism, should be discussed alongside the subject of democracy since, in my opinion, they are all related to the patterns and choices made by the oil and gas industry, which have ultimately created our societies.
