If I were working with this student, one strategy I would focus on is being aware of my own biases while taking the time to really understand their cultural background. Coming from Puerto Rico and adjusting to a new environment, language, and expectations is a lot to manage at once, and that can easily impact both school and social connections.
I would start by creating a space where the student feels comfortable talking openly about what they're experiencing. I'd ask simple, open questions about how the transition has been for them and what's been the hardest part. From there, I would connect them with ESL support, tutoring, and possibly student groups where they might find others with similar experiences. Feeling less alone can make a big difference in whether someone stays or gives up.

In my own cultural background as a Black American woman with Southern coastal roots, I've grown up understanding how culture shapes how we communicate, cope, and connect with others. My work in human services, along with the leadership training program I'm finishing in April, has really strengthened my awareness of how important it is to approach people with respect and without assumptions.
To me, culture is more than race or ethnicity, it's the values, experiences, and environment that shape how someone sees the world. That lines up with the lecture, and I agree with it because I see it play out every day in my work. Need Assignment Help?
