Discuss concept of wellness through an individualized lens

Problem:

For a long time, I looked at the concept of wellness through an individualized lens-as a personal project of self-optimization, routine, and discipline. However, after reading Megan Scribe's critique of the trillion-dollar wellness industry, my perspective of wellness has been reoriented. Scribe masterfully exposes how modern "wellness" functions as a tool of late settler-capitalism, shifting the burden of healing entirely onto the individual. By framing systemic, historical trauma as a personal flaw that can be solved with the right consumer habits or lifestyle changes, the dominant culture effectively erases the structural violence of colonialism. It transforms a collective need for justice into an isolated, exhausting pursuit of self-actualization and personal perfection. This individualistic trap is precisely what Dennis Raphael suspects is wrong with public health frameworks. Despite overwhelming empirical evidence that the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)---such as housing security, income distribution, and systemic equity-are the primary drivers of well-being, our institutions remain stubbornly obsessed with biomedical and behavioral risk factors. When the state focuses strictly on lifestyle choices, it engages in a subtle form of victim-blaming, punishing people for the predictable biological and psychological toll of deprived living conditions.
