Ballet art or sport?
Have you sometime thought about why practices as gymnasia could be consider as a sport, but the ballet does not? Some people argue that the ballet deserves to be recognized as a sport due to its level of demand, but others defend the point of view that the ballet is just an artistic expression which does not achieve all the requirements to be a sport. But that is the point, the ballet could have all of them is they want to. Ballet should not be considered just an artistic expression, because it requires physical demands just like any high-performance sport.
Through history ballet have been related with sports. According to (Dickason, 2013) In the 20th century the choreographer Yakobson, tried to adapt ballet to soviet ideals. Because In the Soviet Union the ballet had a political use, to show cultural superiority through the cold war; the ballet was developed as an extreme training, just exactly as any sport. At 17th and 18th century Louis XIV helped to institutionalize the ballet (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). In France and Italy, the ballet was converted as a formal discipline in academies, with intensives trainings which would be compared to sports latter. And thus, we can seetracing back to its historical origins, how ballet has been crossed with both art and sport.
There were attempts to create competitions to turn it into an Olympic sport. "Recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is necessary for ballet to be included as an Olympic sport" (Art de Ballet, n.d.). To be able to be included at the Olympic games, the balled would have characteristics as global participation, sports organization and clear competition system. To give to the ballet a more competitive character, several international competitions were created (The editors of Encyclopedia Britannica, n.d.). Those competitions had a similar propose as Olympics games, they had impartial judge and rules. Even all these efforts, they are not considered one because the principal propose of them is to express through art, and they would have to sacrifice that, to complete all the requirements to be included at Olympic games.
Despite sports must meet certain requirements that ballet does not have, it could turn into one if they chose it as exactly as rhythmic gymnastics did. The ballet and Gymnastics have similarities as flexibility and strength, artistic expression, athletic power, rigorous training and preparation (Madison, n.d). But although that, the ballet misses elements as rules, gymnastics requires equipment and wear specific clothe to avoid getting caught on that, and the starting age which is freer with dancing. The common characteristics are the ones that open a debate if the ballet should be consider as a sport, because the gymnastic does. But the adverse factors are the reasons why they cannot.
