Discuss about social media use as a form of dissociation

Problem:

In the article "Why It's Important to Think about Social Media Use as a Form of Dissociation, Rather than Addiction" written by Amanda Baughan, a PhD student at the University of Washington, she claims that social media usage causes people to dissociate. She discusses how she doesn't believe it can be considered an addiction. To support her claim, she goes over the different forms of dissociation that people participate in. Specifically, she circles back to the most common form of dissociation that people naturally do on a daily basis. Baughan states, "Then there are common, everyday experiences of dissociation, which involve attention being limited to a narrow range of experience. Everyday dissociation can be passive or active." She further states that "Dissociation is part of healthy cognitive functioning, as mind-wandering helps you learn, and combating stress through deeply engaging in hobbies can boost your mood." Although I do believe that dissociation can be healthy, I also know it can affect people in negative ways as well, depending on what they are dissociating in. And more particularly, when you're dissociating on social media, you have higher chances of being exposed to things that have little to no substance.
