Leadership is the process of guiding, teaching, motivating, and directing activities towards attaining goals. Leaders have the ability to motivate and influence others. Leadership is based on an empowerment of self and others. Management involves the coordination of resources through the activities of planning, organizing, directing, and controlling others to accomplish specific goals in an organization.

Ideally a good manager should possess leadership ability. A great leader does not have to possess management skills. Leaders and managers influence and direct the activities of others. As a nurse leader, we possess the abilities to work closely with the staff as well as management. Seeing firsthand what changes can be implemented to create a positive working environment with better outcomes, and take that same influence we have with the staff to the management level!

Describe the difference in roles between leadership and management. Explain how the goals of management and leadership overlap and provide one example. As a nurse leader, describe how you can facilitate change by taking advantage of this overlap.
