Objective: The Joint Commission established health equity as a National Patient Safety Goal, 16.01.01. with requirements to begin reporting collected data by January 1, 2025. Failure to comply with regulatory requirements could result in sanctions or potential penalties; therefore, the hospital must develop a risk mitigation strategy to proactively address this issue. This is critical as Emory Johns Creek Hospital (EJCH) supports a community where 17 percent of its patient population is of limited English proficiency. The following cost benefit analysis of a risk mitigation strategy is presented to the Board of Trustees to inform their decisions and aligns with the fiduciary and legal responsibilities of the Board in its duties of care, loyalty, and obedience (Board Roles and Responsibilities, n.d.). Methods: We conducted a literature review of costs associated with the use of multi-modal interpretation services. We estimated benefits through decreases in 30-day readmissions, length of stay, legal claims, and decreased productivity by the inappropriate use of bilingual staff. Results: Implementing a comprehensive, multi-modal approach to the provision of interpretive services to LEP patients would result in net monetary benefits of nearly $14.8 million over five years.
