Johnson's Theory! Johnson's theory is sometimes hard for students to grasp - it can be quite abstract. Just try your best! Here are some tips:

Johnson believed that the patient is composed of (i) the biological system (medical) and (ii) the behavioral system. She believed nursing is concerned with helping the patient regulate and maintain/regain a balance in the behavioral system through assessing the 7 subsystems.

The patient is a behavioral system composed of 7 subsystems: affiliation, dependency, ingestive, eliminative, sexual, aggressive, and achievement. If even one subsystem is not in balance the optimal behavior is not being shown by the patient and will result in disequilibrium. The subsystems include aspects that are biological, social, psychological and cultural and interrelate to one another in the patient.

The nurse's role is to step in to help restore the subsystem(s) to balance -> Goal: to reach best possible function/equilibrium and foster effective behaviors and functioning of the patient to prevent illness or worsening illness (balance and stability). Nurses should review the 7 subsystems of the patient in question and attempt to balance the ones "out of whack" through regulating the internal/external environments and providing resources to maintain and/or balance the patient's behavioral system as a whole. Stability and balance of the behavioral system is demonstrated by observed behavior by the patient that is purposeful, orderly, and predictable that maintains their equilibrium overall.

For your initial post: Consider and explain any clinical-practice situation (either one that is real for you or another one) that demonstrates Johnson's model of health (remember a patient can have multiple subsystems out of whack or just one). Think about the subsystems, either together or one in particular, and explain how the nurse can support/use this theory to return the patient to balance and stability. Remember word counts and to use one scholarly source.

Homework

Length: 14 to 20 slides.

The below two sections should all be put into one PowerPoint presentation. PPTs should have a title slide, objective slide, content slides, and a reference slide. Review the Webinar PPT presentation for a guide as to requirements for PPTs.

First section: Orlando's Theory: Read the Case Study on Susan and her father in the Module and apply Orlando's theory; answer the following questions:

What questions does Orlando's theory guide the nurse to consider in caring for Susan and Sam? (Think about how Orlando focuses on alleviating helplessness and how to combat it and put these into question form for Susan and Sam) Develop a Family Plan of Care from the perspective of Orlando: the care plan needs to be detailed and substantial for full credit

Second section: 1950s and 60s Explore the 1950 and 60's in the United States and discuss the below items:

What was happening in the US regarding culture, society, economics, struggles? What did nursing look like regarding jobs, responsibilities, dress, autonomy, respectFinally, clearly describe and label a slide as Accomplishment for the most influential accomplishment you think in nursing theory from this era? - This needs its own heading and explanation

Description:

Create a PowerPoint presentation that addresses each of the following points/questions. Be sure to completely answer all the questions for each bullet point. Use clear headings that allow your professor to know which bullet you are addressing on the slides in your presentation.

Create a PowerPoint to answer the following:

Case study

Ann, a community nurse, made an afternoon home visit with Susan and her father. After the death of her mother, Susan had growing concerns about her father living alone. "I worry about my father all the time. He is becoming more forgetful and he has trouble seeing. Mom used to take care of him. I am not sleeping and I am irritable around him. Yesterday I shouted at him because he wouldn't let me help him with his laundry. I felt terrible! I am at my wits' end! My brothers and sisters do not want to put dad in a nursing home but they are not willing to help out. As usual, they have left me with all the responsibility. I work part time and have two small children to care for." Susan's father, Sam, sat quietly with tears filling his eyes. He was well nourished and well-groomed but would not make eye contact. Nurse Ann noticed that the house was clean and orderly. A tray in front of the TV had the remains of a ham sandwich and glass of ice tea. Mail was piled up, unopened on a small table near the front door. There was only one car in the driveway and the yard was in need of attention.
