Develop a plan to meet one identified learning need

Problem: Within the Patient Teaching section of the content area, you will find the teaching learning assignment template in a WORD document. You are to identify a person in need of health teaching and provide that patient education.

This does not need to be one of your clinical patients, although it may be. It may be your grandmother who continues to cook with butter even though her cholesterol level is sky high. It may be your diabetic uncle who lives alone and isn't eating like he should. It may be your significant other who needs to drop a few pounds...really needs to drop a few pounds.

As with all patient care, you will need to assess the patient's readiness to learn; diagnose, plan and implement an appropriate plan; and finally, evaluate the effectiveness of your teaching episode.

My assignment is diabetic friend.

Objective of this experience

1. Using principles of teaching-learning develop a plan to meet one identified learning need.

To meet the objective, discuss the following as they relate to assessing learner need and readiness to learn, then create a plan based upon that assessment.

Assessment:

1. Readiness for learning

A) The need to learn exists, but does the client recognize this need?

Is he/she psychologically ready? Explain your answer.

Is he/she physically ready? Explain your answer.

B) Are there other problems more important to him/her at this time that takes priority?

2. Content:

A) What do you know or need to know about this client and his/her disease or condition?

B) How much does this client already know and what more does he/she need to know?

3. Factors affecting the client's learning ability

A) How do you anticipate his/her educational experiences or occupation will affect or influence the learning process?

B) What adaptation must be made because of his/her cultural or religious background?

C) What economic factors would affect his/her compliance with the teaching plan?

D) Will his/her illness affect ability to learn?

E) Where would be the best place for the client to learn?

Diagnosis: (Use the following care plan form)

1. Formulate an appropriate Nursing Diagnosis

Planning:

1. Write 1 Patient Goal in terms of client behavior.

2. Select the materials appropriate to the level of the client (e.g. lecture, demonstration, return demonstration, discussion, role modeling, visual aids, pamphlets, games, videos, slides, textbooks, written instructions, supplies, resource people, etc.) and indicate a rationale for these materials.

3. Ascertain how much can be taught in a given period.

Implementation:

1. Teaching interventions that outline the teaching plan every step in the procedure.

2. Rationales - use the teaching/learning rationales you learned in teaching/learning theory.

Evaluation:

1. Compare client's actual behavior with the behavior listed in the client goal to see if learning did take place.

2. Describe what factors helped or hindered the process.
